I’ve often said that they only work if the population is without sin and everyone is cooperating. (Thus the need to coerce cooperation leading to dictatorships and fascism.)
Corruption is a work-around that I hadn’t considered.

I agree with syn that corruption is the workaround to socaialism (markets always happen). Socialism though, only works if the basic instincts/tendencies of humanity are completely turned on their head (and not necessarily that they be free of sin), which is why it never works. North Korea is probably the most thorough attempt to subjugate the will of humanity to the state. The only measure by which that could be considered a success is in the political stability brought by a thoroughly subjugated and dehumanized population.

So basically socialism will only work in a world in which it isn’t needed? Kind of like most lefties I know.
